I can use the Elephant and Piggie books and plushies to foster a variety of skills. The simple format of the stories is perfect for "read and repeat" activities in which I read a page and the students repeat after me, enabling students to improve their vocabulary, learn how to read, use intonation (as directed by the punctuations) and understand how dialog is written. The students learn turn-taking when they either choose which character they want to read or take turns reading pages. Skills like story retell, recall of details and sequencing events can be addressed when a book is finished or during the next time the book is read. The illustrations are engaging without being visually overwhelming. The students enjoy the characters. The plush toys can be used by the students as they tell and retell the stories or change details of the stories. "Say Something" promotes verbal communication, which is important to students who stutter and have Selective Mutism. It endorses the idea that what one has to say is important, regardless of how it is said. Although calendars are completed in the classroom, students benefit from having additional exposure to completing the calendar and opportunities to review the names of days, months, special occasions and count.
