  • Color Me Successful

    Funded Apr 21, 2023

My students used these erasable pens for note taking, end of year projects, and studying for End of Course exams. They were excited to receive new writing utensils at a point in the year where our supplies were dwindling. These pens assisted them in showcasing the AVID note-taking skills that they have learned this year. The different colors allow them to creatively represent their ideas, organize their thinking, make connections, and ask higher level questions through their chosen note-taking format. Thank you so much for supporting my students!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. DeCosta

  • Give Us a Seat at the Table

    Funded Nov 29, 2022

The students at Cross Keys High School are thrilled to have these picnic benches available in our courtyard now! The picnic benches are used daily by students to enjoy their lunch outside of the crowded cafeteria and to get a break from sitting inside a classroom all day. Teachers are also utilizing the space for outdoor activities that bring the classroom and learning outside. They are fairly lightweight so we have been able to move them around into flexible configurations to support all types of projects and activities - building catapults using quadratics, tie-dying t-shirts for spirit week, team building and social emotional learning activities, playing traditional Latin-American games as part of cultural studies in Spanish class, etc., etc.! Before we received these picnic benches, the courtyard space was never used by teachers or students. It has been such a joy to see the space come to life. Thank you so much for your support with making this project become a reality!”

  • LEGO Mathematics

    Funded Aug 13, 2019

Thank you so much for your generous contribution to my classroom. My students were so surprised and excited when our Lego kits arrived! Many commented that they had never had the chance to play with Legos. They eagerly opened up the kits and started building!

We have used the Legos to complete several class projects on equivalent fractions, square and cube roots, and the Pythagorean Theorem. Working hands-on with the Lego models has greatly enhanced my students' understanding of these concepts. I am planning to use the Legos in our upcoming end of semester project on building linear and exponential function patterns. Thank you again for your donation.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. DeCosta

These LEGO sets will help my students to develop proportional and algebraic reasoning skills that they will need to be successful in high school and college level mathematics. Working in groups, they will build fraction, ratio, and percent models, exploring the concept of equivalency as the size of the whole changes. They will build growing patterns using various colors and shapes, exploring the concepts of linear, quadratic, and exponential growth. The visual and hands-on learning will help my students make new connections to numbers and quantities, and they will learn to think of mathematics as a subject of creativity and exploration.
