I teach approximately 125 amazing 5th graders each year and I absolutely love them. The 18" stools that I chose for my project would replace the not so sturdy plastic stools that my kids use daily during small groups, as flexible seating around the classroom and out on our stoop (we're in a portable.) With 25-30 students in my class at a time, gentle reminders about not leaning or rocking while sitting in them, and constant retightening of their screws throughout the year, these stools lasted to the end of the year by the hair of their chinny chin chin. Flexible seating allows my kids to engage more effectively with their learning on an individual and collaborative level; when they are working in a comfy spot, they focus more on their own work rather than what others are doing. The 24" stools I chose have a two-fold purpose. I have a few counter height tables because many of my kids physically need to alternate between sitting and standing while working. Also, several of my students are quite tall. The taller tables accommodate their stature much better than the student tables. The flexibility to sit or stand when needed, fit and sit comfortably at a taller table, and have high quality seating that will last several school years' worth of movement around the classroom by hundreds of students is immeasurable. With these stools, my kids will have safe, and sturdy seating that meets their diverse uses and needs in the classroom.
