  • Diversity and Understanding Begin With Us

    My Donor's Choose project was intended to help students have more access to a large diversity of books. I wanted to introduce them to more diverse people and cultures.

    The books I received have done that, but also so much more. I have students this year bringing me one of the books donated and expressing their thoughts on what they had read and how much they liked it. It makes me smile so much bigger when I realize that the book was one of my "Diversity and Understanding Begin with Us" books.

    I have done read-alouds with several of my books. The discussions that come after in my class are thoughtful and inspire new questions and insights into other people and cultures. It is only from exposure to diversity that we build understanding, respect, and acceptance.

    I expect each year to build upon my library. Students will continue to read these books and I am grateful that I can help facilitate a growth of acceptance and understanding one child at a time.”

Having optional seating for students helps focus their attention on the task at hand. The balls will help keep their bodies strong and give an option in seating. New headphones will replace the ones we have that only work on one side. Donating to our project will help students increase their attention and ultimately help them move successfully through the school year. I have many students with special needs in attention deficit. The bands help with my many students that need to fidget in order to concentrate. The ability to focus will help them succeed in grade 5 and move towards middle school.

About my class
