My classroom has a HUGE steel table in the back that was created by the welding department years ago. On the down-side, it takes up all the potential for flexible seating but, on the up-side, since I teach Yearbook, Career Prep, Education & Training, and Graphic Design, this is the one place we can come together without having to sit at the computers. Right now, we only have one very old bar stool and one I reconditioned. I would like to give the kids a place to sit and not have to stand as we collaborate our projects or just need a break from the computer screens. When they can sit in comfortable seats, they are less likely to be figity and more likely to participate in our collaboration thus learning to be contributors to the greater picture. These seats will also give them a place to remove themselves from in front of the computer screen and look through magazines and mailers at the table that pertain to their classes. I've made a table cloth and table runner to make it somewhat of a coffee table environment too. I was told that if I make my room a place they want to hang out in, they'll (1) learn more because they feel comfortable, and (2) bring friends for a safe place to relax and learn.
