My fourth graders are passionate about their writing. They write stories, essays, reports, and opinion pieces. Apps such as Google Docs and Google Slide Show help my students to collaborate on writing projects, share feedback, request feedback from peers or teachers, and to share their work in meaningful ways. Currently, we have ten Chromebooks in our classroom. Ten devices are difficult to share between 31 students, but with five more Chromebooks, half of us can work on them at a time, or pairs can share. Five more Chromebooks would make technology much more accessible to the students in my classroom.
With five more Chromebooks, my students will be able to utilize Google Apps for projects across the curriculum. They will write about their reading, create slide shows to present their research in science and social studies, and write opinion pieces to share with the policy makers in their lives. They will be able to share their work with friends and to access their work at home or in the library. Access to more Chromebooks would enable me to help my students create projects that include neat formatting and graphics, preparing them for the higher expectations of middle school.
The Chromebooks would also be used in my classroom for adaptive learning programs such as DreamBox, Achieve 3000, and Lexia, as well as extra challenge and skill building programs such as Khan Academy and XtraMath.
The ten Chromebooks I currently have are used every day in my class. Five more would expand how I can use them and give each student more time to access them as a resource in their studies.
