When students have had trauma in their lives, they have a difficult time achieving. Whether it's academically, professionally, or personally, students carry that trauma with them. Teaching good SEL skills such as calming strategies, self-regulation, mindfulness skills, and social skills have shown to help students focus, create better relationships, communicate better, and manage emotions so that they can be successful. Having a space that is comfortable, with flexible seating such as wobble chairs or wobble cushions allow the student to manage themselves in a way that works best for themselves. They learn to advocate for what they need as an individual. Also having activities to help calm while in this space allows them to self-regulate and move back to the classroom quicker.
