My students crave an environment that is equal parts safe and exciting. I plan to build "Book Boats" for my students to sit in while they read. Reading can be a very intimate experience, especially for little ones who are not yet fully comfortable with their skills. Book Boats will give my students a space that will encourage them to read by being an exciting experience while providing them the physical security that they need to feel comfortable as they focus. The lid of each bin will be cut in half to form a desk-like table on which they can write reflections about their reading while the blankets and pillows cushion them and enforce the idea that reading is a leisurely and fun experience, not just an academic requirement. These materials will produce 6 Book Boats, the perfect number for my 18 students to use as a quiet reading center. Book Boats will be especially beneficial to my students who experience trauma outside of school. They are secure without being restricting and can be easily moved to any location in the room where my students feel comfortable. They encourage individual time, which can be used for quiet moments of reflection as well as reading.
