At our low-income school, we have many children who carry a lot of emotional baggage that they shouldn't have to at their young age. The Peace Corner in my classroom will help give my at-risk students a chance to calm down and learn how to manage their social and emotional problems. Making sure that students are able to build their social and emotional learning (SEL) skills is very important for a student's well being. Not only that, but studies have shown that students who have a higher awareness of their social and emotional learning skills do better academically.
The products that I have selected will help my at-risk students by giving them a more effective area in the classroom to calm down and not feel overwhelmed. My goal is to not react and send them out of the classroom to make them feel more unwanted, hence surfacing more struggles within my students. The Calming Color pillows, rug, and chairs are made for students to feel less overwhelmed, to feel at peace, remove their concentration from everything else, and allow the student to calm down, focus, think and have a chance to feel positive about their next choices in the classroom. These amazing students almost always make awesome choices that have turned their whole day around positively!
My goal with the Peace Corner is to give at-risk students who have behavioral and emotional issues a chance to relax, calm down, and make a positive choice in the classroom. Especially in the low-income area that these students come from, they carry many responsibilities within the home, for themselves and siblings, and even worrying about their parents. I want this Peace Corner to help me at risk-students to feel loved in the classroom! To know I have a peaceful place for them!
