Our students at our high school are definitely unique as they are 100% immigrants. Most of these students come with little to nothing in the United States and that also means they do not have the money to buy all the soccer equipment they need. Soccer is a medium through which they can build confidence and camaraderie, which are essential to any person entering an unknown world. In addition, it supports them in finding academic success as they are aware they need to be in an appropriate academic standing to play. Just a few years ago, the graduation rate for our school was slightly over 60%, which demonstrate the importance of leveraging any resource possible to make sure our students graduate. In order to be in the team, students must be in good academic standing and be on track for graduation, which means that we (coaches) will make sure that we have 14 students well on their way to graduation. Having all the resources needed would increase our chances of being successful and that will also impact the school climate. A successful team will lead to school pride and in turn lead to better academic progress. That is the type of positive impact these donations could cause. These kids come with little to nothing, and this program is attempting to give them something. A clear message that they are indeed welcome and that they matter in this country. The soccer balls, soccer ball bag, shin guards, cones, training jerseys, and ladder will all help them for practicing in an organized and efficient manner. They all serve the purpose of enhancing the experience and being successful afterwards.
