My students are eager to learn and want to know how to read, desperately. However, because of their special needs, i.e., learning disability, ADHD, speech and language impaired, emotionally disturbed, to name a few, they struggle to learn that same way their peers do. I've had to take many, many steps back in their curriculums, and only then, was I able to understand why they weren't where they were "supposed to be." Through years of research based evidence, having strong phonological awareness skills is the hallmark and best predictor for a student's reading success. Without being able to read, our students are lost. They're confused, their self-esteem is lowered, drastically, and they are never able to "catch up" without developing scientifically proven learning interventions and skills. Without this crucial foundation, we're setting our kids up for failure and the gap between readers and nonreaders, only grow wider. These materials will aid as visuals and supplemental materials for my already in place pre-literacy and reading intervention programs, by bringing them to life through visuals, play, and manipulation. A child's only job is to learn and play. With these materials, I can help foster, exactly that!
