We will be using these materials to teach our students about macromolecules in a meaningful way. We use the markers so the students can illustrate an energy biomass pyramid so that the students can understand how the flow of energy in an ecosystem works. We will be using the dialysis tubing and the Lugol's solution as part of a lab on identifying macromolecules in food. It is important that we have realistic and relevant labs so that I can possibly cultivate some STEM interest in the students. I believe that the reason that minorities are underrepresented in STEM fields is that in their formative years, they are not exposed to relevant or meaningful labs.
