  • A Classroom Library

    Funded Aug 6, 2020

My students were so excited to receive these books! My students LOVE to read. We are keeping track of how many books we read this year and although we are only one week into the school year, my students have finished four books. I'm excited to get some diverse authors and subjects into the hands of my students. I read one of the graphic novels that was in my project ("When Stars are Scattered" and that has inspired me to teach a unit in ELA on graphic novels. A couple of the books are about witches, which is a topic my students like to read about. It was also great to see my students get excited about non--fiction books. Overall, thank you for helping to fund my classroom library.”

  • Coding for Cool Kids

    Funded Apr 6, 2020

I received these coding sets right after we were shut down for the school year so my fourth graders were not able to use them. However, I now teach sixth grade and my students are very interested in science and engineering.

One learning experience they had occurred before we even opened up the boxes. Two of the boxes say that they are for ages 3-5. To which a student said, "I'm not a baby"! This lead to a discussion about how we can use tools aimed at any age to help us with learning.

We will be using the coding sets later on this school year so we haven't been able to use all of the materials yet. My students are really looking forward to being able to code the robot to do funny things! Thank you again for your donation.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Brown

  • Nonfiction Books for Miss Piburn's Students

    Funded Sep 20, 2019

My students have LOVED being able to read these nonfiction texts. Their favorite books are the ones about Jane Goodall and Egyptian Pyramids. Something that I have been doing with the kids one on one is partner reading the book about Jane Goodall's life. There is a lot of new vocabulary in the book so I make sure to read it with my students so they understand. Some of my boys have been reading the "History of Baseball" book over and over again. It is great that they are able to connect their love of sports to reading.

We try to get in as much reading as we can in my class. I typically will have students read when they are done with something and waiting. I also try to build in 20-30 minutes a day of sustained silent reading. This is done to build stamina. My students also love to partner read. Our current read aloud is "Holes", which my kids are obsessed with. They have made connections between the book and things we are doing in class. They now say "the first hole is the hardest" when we start something new!”

  • Yoga Mats for Miss P's Class

    Funded Aug 12, 2019

My students love the blankets SO much! The yoga mats I wanted were out of stock so I ended up ordering eight thin blankets for my students to use. Some choose to use them during our afternoon meditation and others like to use them during silent reading. A fun time that my students had with the blankets is during a "photo shoot". Our school librarian wanted pictures of kids reading so we used the blankets and posed for some pictures.

My students were so shocked to find out that they were getting blankets. They loved the variety of colors of the blankets, especially "Hodag" green. The kids like to cuddle up with the blankets to read around the room. Something that was funny was that we needed a folding lesson for the blankets. The kids came with a wide variety of ways to fold a blanket. Some of the ways were not exactly neat. But now that they can fold up the blankets, they are responsible for keeping them folded nicely when not in use.

I see us using the blankets all year, especially now that winter is coming!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Brown

I am requesting yoga mats for my fourth grade class to help teach self awareness, mindfulness and stress management. I would like to begin each day with a social/emotional lesson and would be using the yoga mats during such time. I believe that teaching yoga will allow my students to become in touch with their minds and bodies, allowing them to gain self control. I would like to have yoga mats for my students to use to create a soft surface for students to practice on rather that the tile floor. I would like to have daily yoga practices and I think my students would be more comfy on the mats.
