Chemical demonstrations, especially those involving everyday items, grab the attention of the students. By providing a hands-on lab, and demonstration, students can take the concepts we've learned in class and apply them to the demonstration, and later to the lab portion of the class. A safety shield will allow students to see demonstrations they otherwise would not be able to safely witness in the classroom. The included dust explosion demonstration is a perfect example of a demonstration that we currently cannot do in the class. These items together will allow me to give them a demonstration that focuses on some of the basic concepts of chemistry, surface area, and reactivity. The demonstration would be an opening to the concepts of reactivity and surface area. Once completed, I would question them on what they observed and ask them to explain the differences. After which we could move on to teaching the concept, and complete with a lab focusing on that concept.
