With last year being the first year of AP Environmental Science at my school, it was hard to know what I would need or want to supplement my classroom lab experiences. Now that I have taught the course, I know that a hydroponics system would be a great addition to the line-up of activities that my students do over the course of the year.
The items I am requesting for this project will help get a series of hydroponics based experiments up and running. These experiments will include testing whether plants grow better in soil or the hydroponics system, how adding different nutrients will impact plant growth, and running lethal dose (LD50) experiments.
As a bonus, my 9th grade biology students will be able to use the plants grown in these systems to view mitosis under microscopes and to visualize photosynthesis and cellular respiration during our "Creating Oxygen - Cellular Energy" lab.
