I teach Kindergarten at Citizens Academy East in Cleveland, Ohio. The majority of the students in my classroom come from low-income households and do not always have access to books, especially books at their reading level. Leveled books would enhance my classroom library and provide my students with the opportunity to choose books that interest them and challenge them. When my students are engaged in independent reading, their confidence grows and they become more excited to try new books. My students read with me, partner read with classmates and read independently. Leveled readers help my students with comprehension, fluency and phonics. With a larger classroom library, my students will increase these skills while also forming a love for reading. Book bags will provide the opportunity for my students to take leveled readers home. Reading at home with parents, siblings and relatives is imperative for student growth, and is not always possible in all households. Not every house has a variety of books at their child's reading level and book bags would solve this problem. With book bags, my students will be excited to take the books they practiced at school and read them at home with their families or by themselves. This project will expose my students to a print rich environment at school and at home and help them continue to enjoy independent reading time! They will be extremely thankful for new books and treat them with love and care.
