Our class sessions are very interactive where self-direction and collaboration is at the center. Students explore Social Studies through variety of project-based strategies and activities, the success of which relies heavily on availability of appropriate supplies. For example, we practice Document Based Questions in the group setting where students are analyzing primary and secondary sources in order to address a historical question with a clear argument. In order to facilitate such an activity successfully, one must have access to appropriate supplies like poster-sized sticky notes, markers, scissors, glued sticks and such. Additionally, we engage in a lot of activities that involve arts. This pilot school is centered around having humanities and arts in every field of inquiry and the students in attendance choose to come here because they are interested in that perspective. It is my 1st year of teaching and I don’t have the much-needed supplies to give to my students, not am I rich enough to purchase them myself just yet. The school, although attempting to provide the basic necessities in good faith is currently unable to fulfill these needs; yet we need to move forward and learn. I’d like to make this year fun and if you think you could help us out with getting these supplies to our class here, we will very much appreciate you!
