History isn't just about reading a book and memorizing dates anymore! With the materials I am requesting, the students can get a real hands-on experience while learning about early Native Americans and life in the 13 Colonies. Hearing about life back then is not always relevant and engaging, but having a real experiences that they would have had living at that time is something they can connect to their own lives and is super fun and memorable! Primary sources are an invaluable way for students to connect their lives with objects from the past. Actually holding [a copy of] the Constitution is extremely different from seeing excerpts typed out on a page, or even just seeing a picture of it on their computer screens. The primary sources packs and the Revolutionary War Resource kit provide not only tangible items the students can handle but also books that the students can read on their own to foster literacy skills as well. The craft resources will allow students to experience basket weaving and pottery making similar to those tribes in early America. My students usually struggle with the notion that all the tools, clothes, and materials that the Native Americans used had to be made by hand! By taking the time to make a small basket, they can not only express their individual styles in an artistic way, but also appreciate the time and energy that went into making all these items. Engineering practices also come into play when designing their baskets, as far as materials needed, dimensions, workability, and wear. This project encompasses nearly all subject areas and is highly engaging for my students! I am excited to see what they create!
