Classroom rhythm instruments help students of all learning styles successfully engage in music class. Musical instruments give students hands-on experience with music and increase music literacy through rhythm reading and practice. And rhythm instruments are fun! Musical instruments help bring music to life for young children! I have used rhythm instruments in kindergarten to keep the steady beat, march to the beat, and listen for the different sounds that various instruments produce. 1st and 2nd graders learn simple rhythms to play on their rhythm instruments and create movement as they play. 3rd-5th graders continue to read and reproduce more difficult rhythms, accompany themselves as they sing, and create rhythm bands with different instruments following different parts. Special education students do very well with hands-on activities and I have had great success with nonverbal students as they find themselves successful with instruments and rhythms. All grade levels love to play instruments and ask when they will get to do so again. Classroom rhythm instruments create a fun, interactive avenue through which children learn to be successful in music.
