As a first year teacher I look into my empty classroom and see so much potential. I have quite a bit of empty wall space, very few resources, and no whiteboard or chalkboard for the kids to show their knowledge. The lack of necessities doesn't upset me because I have the most important resource, my students. However, with your help, and these items I would have the opportunity to provide my kiddos with many options to create a hands-on learning environment.
"Tell me and I forget; teach me and I remember; involve me and I will learn."~Benjamin Franklin
Our classroom is an old computer lab. It was not created as an active learning space. We have one whiteboard that is too high for the kids to reach, and it is located in an awkward space. With a new, portable whiteboard the kids would have the opportunity to show what they have learned, engage in contests, and model solutions. I cannot begin to tell you how desperately needed the board is. In addition to the board I have requested dry erase markers so that we will always be ready to "show what we know".
I am also requesting items necessary to create stations, preserve their work, and to ensure that displays are long lasting. A thermal laminator should be issued to every teacher. We spend so much time creating fun learning activities and printing them on cardstock and paper, but if they are not laminated they do not last a week if they are handled by the kids. Isn't that the point of creating these activities? With your help and the laminator, pouches, cardstock and a pencil sharpener we will be able to create and preserve our learning for many years to come.
