When you're nine-years-old some of the events happening in the world can seem overwhelming. But, can a child really do anything to change that? Our students now know that they can and our school community knows that kindness has a ripple effect. This school year, some of our fourth grade students are setting out to make some positive waves.
The "Lead with Kindness" project has been established to show students that they can change the world, one kind act at a time. Our goal as a voluntary club is to complete a service-oriented task each week to work towards completing projects that will serve our community.
Students have expressed interest in using their lunch time to do more than just eat and socialize with their peers. They want to get out and volunteer their time to help the people of their school, town, and world.
We are planning to utilize these materials to complete the following projects: becoming pen pals with local seniors in assisted living, making life-saving paracord bracelets for troops abroad, wrapping gifts during the holiday season for donations to children's charities, making inspirational placemats for our local soup kitchen, creating heartfelt cards for children in hospitals, using recycled materials to make birdfeeders and envelopes, beautifying our school grounds with flowers, assisting teachers and younger students in the classroom and a few other ripple-making kind acts!
These materials will not only allow our students to complete these projects, but service learning also builds self-esteem, strengthens student connections to their school and community, develops a sense of civic duty, fosters academic achievement, and supports critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
This is more than a club: it is an opportunity to show kids that their actions matter and that anything is possible when you lead with kindness.
