In 5th grade, we are required to read a novel together as a class. I lovereading, but didn't always, until my 6th-grade teacher read the first Harry Potter book to us. Not only did I gain a love for reading, but a respect for others. Harry Potter lets children escape into the world of Wizardry...while still learning! The characters in the book are the same ages as the kids I'm teaching. Being said, they're able to relate it to their daily struggles as 10 and 11-year-olds. It's a wonderful read AND teaches my students empathy for others. This would be my chance to add my touch to match the state standards that all teachers are required to teach. I have a "Harry Potter" area in my classroom specifically there to show the kids my love for Harry Potter and to hopefully inspire young readers to join in on the fun. Reading, I tell my students, is a way to relax the brain...while still exercising it! I am a brand new teacher and I would love, love, love the opportunity to have a class set of these books. There are 6 other books in the series that they could read after this too! Many books school's want you to read are "boring" while something like this would establish so much excitement in my room. I hope it encourages my students to read more and take this on with them into their teen and adult years. Every student has that one teacher that makes a difference in their lives, and I will do that with Harry Potter.
