I have chosen to embark on a new adventure this year by adding flexible seating to my fourth grade classroom. My students have the opportunity to choose the best location in the room to help them learn. I have personally observed flexible seating help promote collaboration, communication, and engagement in my classroom. I began the year by tossing out over half of my classroom desks for yoga balls, bean bag chairs, bungie chairs, yoga mats, stand up computer desks, and area rugs for students during independent and collaborative periods of our day. I am amazed at how flexible seating has empowered my students to make the best decisions for their learning. The products I have selected to add to my classroom were my students' idea. After surveying the class for the pros and cons of our flexible classroom so far, the only negative responses were that the students on the rug for directed lesson time were uncomfortable after sitting on the floor for any length of time. The comfy low seats I am requesting will help them be more comfortable and we can move them all around the room for small group/partner collaboration.
