Teaching is more than just relaying information to students. It is engaging them in fun activities, popcorn reading, taking thirty second dance breaks and so much more. This year, I am teaching math and science to all of the fifth graders. These materials will help prepare students to go beyond the standard. Almost all of my students come from low-income families in North Philadelphia. Thinking back to when I was in middle school, my favorite part of school was going to get all of my brand new school supplies for the new year. Almost all of my students come to school on the first day with just empty backpacks. I want them to feel like they have everything they need within my classroom to succeed. The materials I have selected are key to my students learning. One of the items I chose was personal whiteboards for each student. When students are doing math problems on the whiteboards, it is an easy wipe when they make a mistake and it is also a different method of doing problems rather than in their workbook. They can hold up their whiteboards and I can easily see that every student is on the right track and we are onto the next step or problem. Items like this are key to my students being engaged.
