  • Crafting All Year Long

    Funded Nov 6, 2024

If this is your first time donating or you have lost count, please believe that my students and our school community appreciate your generosity. Over 1,000 students attend our Title 1 middle school in Queens, NY. They come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Our budget is very limited but we usually struggle to ways to fund arts and crafts into our school.

So far this year, we have held about 4 crafting events and served almost 200 students. We have tie-dyed t-shirts, decorated pumpkins and decorated holiday ornaments. Next week we are making friendship bracelets and picture frames to celebrate "Palentine's Day." Our students regularly ask us when the next event will occur and look forward to having a new craft to learn. We have plans for the next few months to decorate flower pots, make flower pens, diamond art and perler magnets.

Your generosity expanded our opportunities to invite more students and have more regular events. Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Henry

  • Color Your Calculations

    Funded Dec 4, 2024

Thank you so much. You cannot believe how much we appreciate this gift. Our bulletin boards and classwork have been bland and banal in black and white. They will explode in color in the coming months to demonstrate our joy in learning math. I look forward to providing scaffolds and differentiated work for my 7th grade math students in color. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.”

  • A Future of Wealth & Fortune

    Funded Jul 8, 2024

My students had a great time playing Monopoly. Most of them had never played before. We had to learn how to put the game board together and the rules of play. This version is also a modern version that uses credit cards. That was fun to introduce the buying power and the responsibility of using a credit card.

Once play started, they had fun buying properties and renting them out. They had to manage their money and strategize when to use their savings.

The game is impacting more than the original group of students. Other math enrichment classes have asked to use the games to give their students an opportunity to play/practice. The generosity of you, the donors, will continue to affect the learning experience of many other students.”

  • Life Is a Game

    Funded Apr 30, 2024

My students had a great time playing the game of Life. Most of them had never played before. We had to learn how to put the game board together and the rules of play.

Once play started, they had fun earning money from their job. Some students chose to begin working right away and earning a salary. Others chose to go to college first and then chose a job earning a higher salary. This is a reflection on some of the content we learned in class about financial literacy. They got so excited when they got paid. LOL.

The game is impacting more than the original group of students. Other math enrichment classes have asked to use the games to give their students an opportunity to play/practice. The generosity of you, the donors, will continue to affect the learning experience of many other students.”

  • Fresh Air-Fun-Field Day

    Funded May 10, 2024

Field day was so much fun! Our school holds field day at the end of the year for all our students. They hang out in the playground next to our school. They often play basketball, jump rope and runaround. They get bored after a while and pull out their video games, cell phones or other electronic devices. While this still did happen, many students PLAYED the entire day.

They tried games and activities they have never done before. They switched and played with other friends in different classes. They seem to have a blast. Thank you so much for your generosity.”

  • Crafty Stitches

    Funded Sep 1, 2022

Thank you so much!! Your generosity is greatly appreciated by me and my students. I am even more excited to start the new school year next week being able to begin setting up my program. Knitting, crocheting and crafting has always been a way to connect with others and share the joy of creating things with my hands. Thanks to you I will get the opportunity to share this with my students.

    Thank you so much!!”

  • Hooking You Up! Crochet and Community

    Funded Oct 25, 2019

Unfortunately, the pandemic derailed our crochet club early in 2020. Students were in the middle of projects when schools were shut down. Most have since graduated and moved on to another school. A few students were able to finish their first projects of cowls or scarves. One student reached out to me and let me know she has continued crafting. She has added knitting to her skills and continues to work on improving her skills.

As we are settling back into a new normal in our school, I look forward to continuing the crochet club in the fall.

    Thank you for your support.”

We are requesting yarn, crochet hooks, knitting needles, storage bags to create scarves, hats and blankets and donate their completed projects. My students will learn to crochet scarves, hats and blankets. While students will keep some projects, most projects will be donated to nursing homes, hospitals and other organizations in our community. I want this project to take my students away from their technology and teach them a craft, teach them to be creative and to think of others. We used to learn more than reading and math in school. Now our students are always preparing for the next test. They are losing connections with other each other and their community. They don't get the chance to learn that they are good at other things. They don't get a chance to create or build things. Learning to crochet will teach them perseverance, dedication and altruism. Our club will meet weekly to learn new skills, assess progress and complete our projects. Students will be able to take projects home to continue working on them and will also have the option to attend lunch sessions for continued practice time.
