I am implementing a mindfulness program at my school this year. Students will come to the mindfulness room to participate in social emotional learning, movement, relaxation, and self regulation practices. Many students at our school have a stressful home life, coming to school is where they can escape hardship and experience safety and love. They will learn important tools to handle stress that they can carry with them throughout their life. My goal is to help students gain a deeper awareness of themselves by exploring and understanding their emotions and learning various tools to self regulate. This program will help provide students with a greater understanding of how to relate, to express their emotions, as well as treating themselves and others with kindness and compassion. Mindfulness supports all areas of children’s development; it improves social, physical, emotional, and creative capabilities. The mindfulness program will encourage learning through observation, self expression, inspiration, sensory perceptions, and a willingness to construct new connection. The tools I'm requesting will help create a calming classroom environment where students can thrive. The light covers will be used to reduce the intensity of the florescent lighting. This lighting, along with the lamps, will make the room feel more comfortable and warm. We will use the speaker to play music that the students can move and dance to. The musical instruments will be used to bring awareness to the students' senses, increase their active listening skills, and for relaxation purposes. We will use the diffuser for essential oils that will contribute to the calming classroom environment. Some oils assist the body to get into a rest and restore mode and other oils stimulate the brain to help students focus.
