My students are constantly asking me to learn a new instrument. If they see something in my classroom that they have not played yet, they want to learn. If they find a YouTube video of someone accompanying a popular song with piano, they come in asking to learn piano. I want to be able to give them the opportunity to learn a string instrument without the prohibitive rental fees that come in a traditional school orchestra program. My students had a brief experience with borrowed ukuleles last year, and they were so engaged that they progressed through curricular standards faster than I had seen before. They were excited to learn a new instrument, and I was able to channel that excitement to motivate them to learn music curricular standards. In addition to the music learning, the class worked on social skills as they worked together in an ensemble, and developed perseverance as they hit harder skills to master. Having a set of ukuleles all year would mean deeper musical understanding and harder work ethic, which is something I am constantly working to develop in our young minds.
