What better way for students to learn about the lives of enslaved African-Americans in United States history than to read the autobiography of one of the greatest Americans-Frederick Douglass. By holding the book in their hands and seeing the pictures on the pages, students will be able to make a connection to someone who was an activist and a leader, and who overcame the challenges his life presented. It is not enough to simply learn facts about famous Americans-students must understand the history and legacy of slavery in order to learn empathy and see their place as activists in the world today! By placing this book in students' hands, you will be giving students the tools to engage deeply with the words of Frederick Douglass, the issues of race, slavery and enslavement, and the role of the individual in creating change in their own life and the world.
