Zen Den for the Win!
Funded Jan 1, 2024We truly can't thank you enough for your contribution to Findlay Middle School's Zen Den. This is a project that has been attempted without success for the previous three years. Your support has allowed us to successfully complete this project and enhance social emotional learning, mental health support, and a safe place on campus outside of the traditional learning settings for our special students. Contributions like yours truly make a difference in our students, families, school, and community, and we're incredibly grateful!
One of my favorite days in the Zen Den is on Tuesdays and Wednesdays when we have our social emotional learning groups. We sit in a circle and utilize the Mind Brain Emotion cards to tap into students feelings, which allows us to introduce interventions that can strengthen any limitations and also provide resources for any concerns outside our scope of practice.
The students and staff love the Feng Shui when they enter the room and enjoy the time spent during one-to one sessions and group meetings. Some students only need to regroup for a few minutes and are ready to return to their learning environment. We have a new activity for the ending of this school year which will be "Yoga for anxiety" sessions. According to the article, "The effects of yoga on mental health in school-aged children: A Systemic Review and Narrative Synthesis of Randomized Control Trials "Yoga can enhance youth's well-being, reduce negative behaviors and enhance self-worth (2023)". It is very important to me as a School Social Worker to introduce a variety of coping strategies for students because all they know is all they've been shown and more is always better.
In closing, your support has made the 2023-2024 school year unique and something students will be able to recall from childhood for years to come. Again, I want to say thank you for seeing the need and potential in this project.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Bryant
