The materials that I am requesting directly correlate to units that the students will be learning about in 7th and 8th grade science classes. For the genetics unit, my 8th grade students are expected to understand what a mutation is to debate the wisdom of creating genetically modified organisms, but how can they talk about a mutation if they are unsure what DNA is? The DNA kit will give them a visualization of all the parts of a DNA molecule and provide a hands-on approach to building their own DNA model. Students love hands-on activities in class because they are more engaged in the learning process. I love teaching about the human body because students can relate to DNA mutations even though they may not know exactly why the mutations occur. The DNA molecules will help to explain why those mutations happen. The stream table will help my 7th grade students understand what happens during weathering and erosion. Weathering and erosion sometimes happen so slowly outside that it's hard for students to really understand how water can change the course of a river or why the wind can create the arches in Utah. For my kids who will never make it out of the state, these concepts are hard to understand. With this model, students can see how powerful water really is.
