Children who have autism have difficulties with communication, learning, social interaction and imaginative play. They need activities that are filled with hands-on experiences and sensory play. They often miss out on projects that take place in a regular classroom that could promote higher level thinking while providing sensory stimulation as well. I would like to provide them with the opportunity to be more self-directed by using project based learning to stimulate their senses as they work together to learn how to code. The lights and movements of programmable robots are perfect for this task. We will start with Code and Go mice that are easier to use and then progress to coding Ozobots. After learning the basics of coding commands, we'll explore how to program Code and Go Mice to move around a board. Then, I'll use a project base learning approach to have students work collaboratively to create road maps with code commands on them for their Ozobot to travel. They'll plan their commands and then they'll draw out their own roads in a town they create.
