Today's students are full of energy and need opportunities to change up their seating. The goal is to provide students with multiple opportunities to show individual accountability and encouragement to do their best through an achievement incentive system. Doing activities as a class often means children have to sit crisscross applesauce on the floor, which can be uncomfortable, or they have to remain seated at their desks in rigged chairs. Flexible seating is a choice provided to students that show responsibility in the classroom, while engaged in learning activities. Through a system of rewarding students for on-task behaviors, they will be allowed to work around the room comfortably and focused. Flexible seating provides students the environment they need to be their best. The more choices students have the more they will feel invested and responsible for their learning. Having Yoga balls, Wobble stools, beanbags, and low back floor chairs, students will be able to use their incentives earned to choose to use an exercise ball (reading, word work, small group), Wobble stools (partner work, using manipulatives, centers), etc. As well as sitting comfortably in a bean bag chair while engaging in silent sustained reading and journaling. I am so lucky and thankful to have a new group of learners that are excited and eager to get involved in our classroom community!
