Last year, my ELA partner teacher had the opportunity to read "The Hate You Give" and some of "Dear Martin". Though I did not get the opportunity as I stepped into the class as a sub, I was able to hear many of her students' reaction and feedback regarding each book. Their interest and excitement intrigued me. We were also able to see the movie in theaters that corresponded with the book, "The Hate You Give". The experience and response from students were phenomenal. This also happened while reading "A Mighty Long Way" and our students were able to visit the Brown v. Board Museum. I've had students who never picked up a book, let alone finish reading one. These readings will allow students who hate reading, never picked up a book to read on their own, or struggle with reading now have options that they can relate to, have a higher interest in, and complete an entire book successfully- while learning various skills to think critically, enhance comprehension, and read on grade level. Reading culturally relevant material as a class and having an opportunity to do so independently produced better quality work, high-level thinking, dialogue, and a positive impact on the student. I'm excited!
