My students are hungry for reading and exploration but their reality is, they are struggling with assessing print rich materials, an environment that fosters peace, relaxation and flexible seating. These four basic elements will allow them to focus on reading.
My students are gifted and talented in Performing Arts because they have been specifically chosen to attend the school of the Performing Arts. Most of my students struggle with basic needs being met. Our school is an urban public school, 100% receiving free and reduced lunch to our hundreds of middle school students. Many of my students are from single parent, low-income, poverty stricken homes where reading is not the first priority.
My goal is to provide a peaceful classroom environment where they can discover “The wonderful world of reading”, which will build their self-esteem, self-confidence, passion and love to be lifelong readers and learners.

“If there is a book that you want to read but it hasn’t been written yet, you must be the one to write it”.
Many studies have shown that reading builds self-esteem, self-confidence and builds academic achievement. My students are 8th graders who read on the 3rd grade reading level. It is imperative that I increase my students reading skills as I am responsible for their learning. I would like to give my students the tools and knowledge they need to become better readers and writers so they will be able to pursue all of their dreams.
I want to encourage them to have a “love for books not a fear of books”. My students will be leaders, teachers, scientists, architects, doctors, lawyers and other distinguished individuals. Providing books, materials, flexible seating and a classroom environment conducive for reading will ensure our students are life-long readers and learners.
