With cardio equipment in my special education classroom, students will be able to engage in productive physical activity while working on classroom tasks such as reading, tablet-based instruction, and even small group discussion and collaborative learning. The idea is that students will have the opportunity to engage in up to several 10-20 minute workout sessions each week while participating in their daily learning activities. Students will be recording their workout data and will track their progress toward both academic and fitness goals throughout the year. I anticipate that classroom behavior will improve as students are given opportunities to expend excess energy in a healthy and productive way. I also anticipate that students will bring more energy to their classroom tasks as overall blood flow and physical health is improved. Students will spend more time being active and will be more active learners as well! Many of our students with autism are prolific walkers, and for some of them, walking is their preferred and most effective stress management strategies. These machines will allow students to engage in these activities even when the weather is not cooperative. Stationary bikes will allow students to take their fitness gains to another level, and will provide a safe method for improving muscle tone for some of our students who have mobility issues. Thanks for taking the time to look over this project. Every little bit of assistance is much appreciated and will go a long way to positively impacting the lives of these students!
