The books on this list will be incorporated into a classroom library that will supplement the literature we read as a class. Each of these books has been picked with my students in mind - each book is diverse and provides stories from all walks of life, just like my students. The students enjoy getting the chance to go to the bookshelves and find a book that they are interested in instead of being told what to read. Including these new books in the classroom library will give students a chance to become independent readers on their own reading level. By developing their reading skills through independent reading, students will gain confidence in their reading abilities and hopefully become avid readers outside of the classroom. The students will be given opportunities to read the books they choose in class, but they can also check them out to take home. In order to develop their reading habits, students will also have a chance to discuss the books they choose to read with other students. By doing this, my hope is to develop a community of readers within my class that will engage in discussions of books on their own once they leave my class at the end of the year. I truly look to not only teach the curriculum in my class but to also develop lifelong learners and readers!
