Moving into a new grade level, I am looking forward to working with primary age students to set them up to succeed in future learning! Having taught English Language Arts last year, I am lacking in vital math manipulatives to help solidify important concepts in active learning. Providing students with these sort of hands-on tools during small group and independent work stations allows for them to develop autonomy in their learning and provides a way for students to teach (or learn from) one another. In terms of classroom seating, not every child thrives in a seat/desk learning environment and it can actually distract them even more to be confined to that kind of space. In incorporating flexible seating options, I am hoping that it will allow each child to experience a learning environment that best suits their needs. Working with younger children, I wanted to give them the opportunity to have a varied seating arrangement to keep them engaged while simultaneously encouraging personal responsibility that comes with the privilege of a "special seat" assignment. Doing so will allow students to demonstrate accountability in their actions and will be reflected in personal and academic growth.
