Despite the many talents and potential of the students I work with, social and emotional struggles seem to increase the rate of acting out behaviors and decrease their displayed academic ability. As a result, the goal is to create a more supportive environment that allows them to use learned tools and strategies to increase self-regulation. Many of the items requested are mindfulness tools that will help with self-reflection, dealing with choices, and even increasing social skills. Other items, bean bags and radio, for example, allow for creating a comfortable place for students to regroup and calm down when needed. Creating opportunities and providing space that support self-regulation, will eventually lead to generalization, and result in academic as well as social and emotional growth.
