Practicing Self-Regulation in the Classroom, We've Got This!

Funded Aug 14, 2019

The resources received from the Donor's Choose Project have helped us create a calm and supportive environment. Our students, who have social and emotional difficulties, are using the resources to aid in their decisions to use learned self-regulation strategies. For example, a student was struggling and experiencing an emotional crisis. One coping strategy had been for him to journal his feelings. However, instead of writing, he would often tear the pages from the journal and throw them around the room. The dry-erase desk, from the Donor's Choose Project, has allowed him an avenue to write down his feelings and then erase them.

When the boxes began arriving, the students were extremely excited. Some of them had never received packages in the mail before, so opening them was a treat. As the items were opened and placed on the table for observation, one student stated, "I can't believe someone actually helped out our class."

Now that the requested items have arrived, we will begin practicing the learned self-regulation strategies, and using the items to support replacement behaviors. The calm and supportive environment will help them grow emotionally and support their efforts in maintaining positive behavioral changes.”

With gratitude,
