I teach first grade in Eagle Mountain, Utah. I requesting two sun lamps for my classroom for better classroom lightening. Due to my classroom being located on an interior wall there are no windows causing the room to be dark and gloomy even with the florescent lights. For this reason, I feel it would benefit my students if we had sun lamps to create more light. According to research from Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica, Light Therapy using sun lamps has been shown to improve “mood, energy, alertness, and productivity scores”(Avery, Kizer, Bolte, & Hellekson, 2001) Thus, my student’s moods and productivity would improve especially during the school year. This would create a more effective learning environment. We will use the lamps daily and also conduct tests throughout the day as we collect data on the student’s moods and attendance. These lamps will help add light while providing a calming and welcoming atmosphere for learning and growing. I will also create a survey for the students to fill out at the end of the year to evaluate the effectiveness of the lamps.
