These novels will finally give my students the opportunity to read culturally diverse, relevant, and popular literature. My students have been given adapted/modified versions of classic literature or no access to novels for their educational career because of their learning disabilities. By the time that my students get to me in high school, they are not only extremely reluctant to read, they are also incredibly disadvantaged because of their reading levels. I struggle constantly to provide my students with a curriculum that they buy into and that is accessible to them. This may be my last opportunity in their educational career to cultivate a love of reading or at least an appreciation of school. I want my students to meet characters that reflect their own struggles and illustrate themes that are current in their world.
