These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. These books will help my ESL students see how they have characters just like them. My classroom library has always been a place that my students really enjoy and it promotes independent reading! Every library book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care . All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind. I have watched them the past school year read titles just like these and have seen the connections they make with these characters. Students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time and create rich discussions amongst their peers. By reading In My Family/En mi familia by Carmen Lomas Garza from Amazon, students will be able to relate by seeing how similar their family is to the one in the story. They will read the autobiographical book Sonia Sotomayor: A Judge Grows in the Bronx / La juez que crecio en el Bronx from Amazon and to see how reading inspired a young Puerto Rican girl to reach for the stars. Students will better understand their culture as well as the cultures of other students. Student discussion will be rich and building their background knowledge to better engage them in reading will be the most fulfilling reward.
With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level.
