Our students are accessing pre-requisite skills that address state standards at a more attainable level for them. However, our program is not given the curriculum materials to teach these skills or address all individual goals. We have to modify and provide alternative curriculum for this purpose. Students also are continuously working on building independence in their learning, in a work station format. The tubs and organizational bins can help them better visualize the expectations of what work needs to be done and where it is located.
Donations to this project will give our students access to curriculum materials in an organized format, and assist in providing an engaging, learning environment for them.
Many of our students cannot handle paper and pencil activities, so laminating materials becomes necessary for them to access the curriculum. The laminator, laminating sheet, and cardstock allow paper/pencil activities to be conformed into laminated with Velcro matching activities. These are great for Science and Social Studies vocabulary or diagrams. Manipulative objects are helpful, even crucial, for teaching concepts, such as number sense and counting. Many of our students are working on awareness of numbers 1-10 and the manipulatives can help them visualize what these numbers mean. Blocks and puzzles are activities that promote attending, matching, spatial awareness, creativity, and improvement of fine motor skills. All of our students have fine motor goals that they work on throughout the year and these engaging activities assist them to learn in fun ways. Educational toys with musical output, such as the Leap Frog items, and tactile, sensory items (stretchy strings and putty) help gain student attention for this learning to occur and can make work tasks more motivating. We want our students to have access to the information they need to make academic progress in a motivating, learning environment.
