This project is all about choices for students. We all learn and are comfortable in many different ways. With the diverse population my school serves, finding innovative ways that are research based to engage the students in active learning are key. My students will be participating in a workshop atmosphere during our literacy block. We will all participate in a lesson on the floor at "the carpet" together. After the lesson and guided practice with modeling, the students will be sent off to practice the skills of the lesson and to add them into their tool belt to be stronger readers and writers. By providing alternative seating with much flexibility, students will have choice in their learning. They may choose traditional seating or find options sitting on yoga mats, sitting on stools at lowered tables, or using stools to hold laptop desks where they can use either their reading/writing notebooks or their chromebooks for their work. Students will feel the freedom to spread out around the room comfortably and find the place where they are most comfortable but also working diligently, using their full potential. With the mentioned struggles for many of my students with diverse backgrounds and language barriers, having choice in their workshop times will help develop much needed confidence and also foster a relationship of them being an active part in their learning. I believe Flexibility in Fifth Grade will be another key piece in making learning engaging and exciting for all of my students.
