One of my goals is to activate my 9 and 10 year olds’ curiosity for math. I truly believe that every student can excel at math at the highest levels, as long as they have teachers who are eager to help pique their interest in math.
My vision for my classroom this year is to inspire through an appreciation of the world and its diverse cultures, and my excitement for teaching hands-on math. Summed up, the tentative theme for my classroom is that we’re “World-Class Global Math Citizens.” Essentially with this idea, since we can’t actually travel, I will bring a global math education (in compliance with state standards) to my kids and our classroom! This will include but is not limited to, the use of manipulatives, centers in which we will have hands-on practice with the various concepts we’ve learned and are learning, outreach to local math experts and other math classrooms in the world, and a welcoming, culturally relevant, classroom ecosystem for all.
I want to create an environment in which EACH of my students can learn in the way that best supports them. In my list of supplies, you will find flexible seating options to support that intent. Flexible seating gives my students the ability to control their own learning and make choices that work best for them. Other supplies include classroom essentials, many of which can be reused to stretch lifetimes and remain useful for hundreds of kids to come. For example, washable cosmetic remover pads will be used as dry erase marker removers, reducing our class’s reliance on paper towels.
I believe in this work and my kids. With your help, I can properly get started in creating the best 4th grade math classroom my kiddos have ever seen!
