Multiple studies show that children who read more often are significantly more successful in school than children who do not. The more they read, the better their reading skills become; the better skills, the more engaged they are in learning. These books represent diversity in characters and topics that can appeal to the demographics in our classroom. This will encourage kids to pick up a book and read. Being able to identify with the character or situation can be half the battle in getting a child to not only pick up a book, but read it, finish it, enjoy it, and look for another. A known fact from Reading is Fundamental is that "More than 8,000 students quit high school every day, limiting their financial potential and ability to become strong members of the workforce." Yet, due to budget cuts, when it comes to reading the options for children to choose from are slim. By incorporating these key books into our children’s routine in 7th and 8th grade, we can strongly increase their ability to stay on track and remain in school, furthering the quality of their future but also the quality of our future society.
