We live in a world that is flooded with technology. Everywhere we turn there are cell phones, computers, gaming systems, self-driving cars, the list goes on. In the ten years that I have been teaching, technology has completely changed my approach to lesson design and classroom management. Our students are connected to each other in ways that did not seem imaginable even 10 years ago. In some ways this is phenomenal: we can often connect with each other immediately, students can access extra help with a google search, and collaborate with each other without having a parent drop them off. However, constantly being attached to a cell phone and social media has caused headaches in the classroom. Phones and constant access to social media is distracting for students. Some days I find myself constantly asking students to put their phones away. It can be exhausting and is a common theme with educators. Through talking to colleagues as well as students, I have found that our students would love to be able to put their phones down and not feel pressured to answer their latest text or Snap, or like their friend's most recent Instagram post. Our students need the opportunity to unplug and focus. Students have a real concern that if they were to place their phone simply on their desk or in their backpacks that it may be stolen. With the cell phone locker, that fear is alleviated. They would have a secure place to store their phone (and charge it!) and be allowed the piece of mind to focus on the challenging material presented during class. The cell phone locker is the solution to allowing students to unplug. This results in improved face-to-face communication as well as a rise deep understanding of challenging material.
