Even my most reluctant readers love laughing at funny stories with a classmate and it builds both their confidence and camaraderie, but it is a challenge to always find engaging texts for this activity. I spent much time last year at my public library checking out books for my class, but I was not able to plan well ahead of time because availability was not guaranteed. Also, students need to be able to quickly find a quiet spot for sharing together, so they don't waste any of their reading time. With these resources, students will build their reading muscles and discover reading to be an enjoyable experience as they share these great books with one another. I have carefully chosen texts that I know will facilitate partner reading. For example, Elephant and Piggie books have two characters telling a story through dialogue. Students will build their reading muscles by reading these books together and then re-telling the story using cues we learn in class. The You Read To Me books include many classic stories rewritten and color-coded to be easily read with a partner. The stories will help students gain cultural background knowledge to apply to more complicated texts later. The cushioned seats will make reading with a partner extra-special: students will be able to quickly grab a seat and find a quiet spot away from other activities.
