Students learn best when they are having fun. It doesn't just sound good, but it's statistically true! Right now, I am using a sharpie and flashcards to teach sight words because that is all we have available to us. I often ponder how I am going to get a group of 20 kindergarteners reading by the end of the year. Through my study, and first hand knowledge, I know that learning sight words is not only necessary, but crucial to their success. I am positive that with these games, my classroom engagement will go up! There is a buzzword in education: game-ify! If you can game-ify something, the children will love it! Everything from class management, to transitions, to moving silently in the hall, game-ify is the way to go! My chatty group of kindergarteners could not walk down the hall without it sounding like a circus was in town. That was until I made walking down the hallway into a game. I told the students that we had to be extra quiet so we can sneak up and scare the next teacher they were seeing! Now I can hear a pin drop while they are walking in the hallway. That is what I want to do with these sight words! I would love to have students learn their sight words in a fun and engaging way. If they are associating fun with reading words, we are already half way there in creating life long readers!
