  • Building Skills, Building Robots: a Soldering Project

    Funded Mar 16, 2025

Thank you for your generous support! My students will be able to experience hands on soldering, circuits, and robotics. Each component, each connection, is a lesson learned. We're not just building robots; we're building confidence and skills that will last a lifetime. Thanks again, from all of us.”

  • Fun Science Books for Class Library

    Funded Sep 24, 2019

Thank you so much for donating to my project "Fun Science Books for a Class Library". I really love to read about science topics that are not in a text book. I believe the students do too. A textbook seems intimidating and full of extra words. The books I ordered with your generous donations have beautiful images to accompany the facts. That makes the topics more interesting. I have actually heard a few comments including "wow! I had no idea that's what that looked like." Or "This is really cool, I actually understand this now."

In the classroom, I reserve the first 10 minutes of class for silent reading time. The students choose what book they want to read that day. After reading they write a short summary of what they read. They are welcome to bring a book from home, but often times students borrow one from our library. Students also read the books after a test or if they finish the assignment early.

One student in particular loves reading science fiction, but is a rather uninterested, unmotivated student. He already borrowed a few books from the library to take home. I have him write essays about the books for extra credit. Something about the word "extra credit" gets him motivated for some reason.

So, from all my students and myself, thank you very much for your generosity and the impact from these books will continue for years to come.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Burdick

When students are not in school they are so busy with other activities or too hooked on technology that reading during non-school hours may not happen. I love to start each period with about 10 minutes of quiet reading time. This helps the students decompress from the last class and prepare them for science class. These engaging and colorful science books will spark interest and curiosity in the students all year long and many students for years to come. Help me build my class library and fill my shelves with fun, engaging science books that the students will enjoy for years to come.
