At the end of last school year, I had to pitch the very old, very filthy rug that I had purchased at the Good Will years ago. It was never large enough for a class to fit on anyway. I would love to have a nice new rug on which to gather students for read-alouds, demonstrations, and art critiques. A rug helps create a nurturing and comfortable environment which is so important when asking students to be brave and share their ideas. A set of watercolors is essential for any art room. We currently have a set from the 1970s that is in terrible shape and only has six colors. My classes of twenty-eight students struggle to find a decent tray, and although I tell them we are lucky to have them, I can't blame them when they complain. I would love to see the look on my students' faces when they see 24 colors in unbroken trays! Finally, I am asking for earthenware clay, glaze, and wire for a few specific projects that I have in mind for the upcoming school year. Students love working with clay and I do too! Last year I had two fourth grade classes learn about endangered animals and sculpt them from pinch pots. I find the lessons students learn from working with clay so applicable to every aspect of life! Students have to be patient, problem-solve, and persevere! The wire is for a 3D abstract sculpture project I would love to try with my fifth graders! So many great ideas, but such little budget..please help my kids have an awesome year in art class!
